Gun safety is one of the most crucial parts of responsible gun ownership. That’s why Sporting Systems is a proud sponsor of the nonprofit Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation (safe around firearms education).

This lifesaving program utilizes prevention education and basic safety skills to educate children of all ages on the importance of gun safety. Everyone from those in elementary school age up is welcome.

The Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation believes that children and their parents should actively pursue personal safety education in order to prevent any firearm incidents.

Sporting Systems cares deeply about the safety of our youth, which is why we were happy to sponsor a firearm safety event for children with the guidance of the Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation.

What is the Kids S.A.F.E. Foundation?

In their classes, children learn the basics of firearm safety, setting the groundwork for the first line of defense that they have against incidents: their knowledge.

The organization holds events all over Oregon and Washington in order to spread gun safety awareness to our youth. For more information about their upcoming events, check out their Facebook page!

Why does adolescent firearm safety education matter?

If you have children of your own or children in your life that you care about, being a responsible gun owner is a necessity. This doesn’t just mean locking up your firearms correctly. It also means educating the youth in your life on the dangers of firearms and how to properly handle them.

Even in the care of a trusted adult children can experience firearm incidents.

Consider the following statistics:

  • Every year, nearly 1,300 children under the age of 18 die from shootings.
  • Adolescents are at a higher risk for suicide when there is a gun in the home.
  • A majority of the victims of unintentional shootings are young boys. They are typically shot by a loved one (usually a brother).
  • Almost 40% of all unintentional gun deaths among children 11 years old to 14 years old occur at a friend’s house.
  • In the U.S., 1 in 3 families with children own at least one gun. It is estimated that there are more than 22 million children living in homes with guns.

Education can be a powerful tool to help minimize any potential firearm-related incidents.
