How do gun locks work?

Examples of safe gun storage, including trigger locks and carrying case Sporting SystemsOne of the most important aspects of owning a firearm is knowing how to safely store it. As one of the first steps of firearm safety, proper storage means a secure safe or gun locker at home as well as secure cases or locks on firearms during transit. Safety devices like these help prevent unauthorized users, including children, from accessing the firearm and reducing negligent discharges.

Here are some of the most commonly used security systems across the country.

Trigger locks:
Trigger locks are two-piece locking mechanisms that fit over the trigger guard. There is a firm cylinder that fits behind the trigger, preventing the firearm from being fired. Trigger locks come with a push-button keypad, combination, or key that opens the lock.

Some of these locks come in a battery-operated option or with anti-tamper alarms as an extra measure of gun safety. These are widely available and inexpensive, allowing reasonably quick access to the firearm if needed.

Cable locks:
Designed like a padlock, one end of the cable is inserted through the chamber and out the magwell, then locked at the base to secure the gun. This prevents the firearm from going into battery, therefore the trigger cannot be pulled. Cable locks are removed either by key or combination.

Gun safes and vaults:
Securing multiple firearms of various sizes can be challenging with individual locks and cables. Investing in a gun safe or vault to fit your expanding inventory keeps your firearms safe but still easily accessible. There are safes small enough for a single handgun and large enough for the serious collector. From bedside table to vehicle vaults, there are plenty of options for safe storage no matter the firearm.

In addition to vaults that are opened by combination or key, there are also fingerprint recognition and Bluetooth capable options. They are popular with responsible gun owners because they are difficult to steal, allow for the firearms to be out of sight, and are generally fire-resistant.

We have many options in stock from Vaultek, GunVault, and work with Tracker Safe locally to provide home deliveries of larger safes. Our team at Sporting Systems can help determine which safe, vault, trigger or cable lock is right for you. Remember, gun safes and vaults are tax exempt!
