The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (BATFE) Federal Firearms Licensing Center (FFLC) issues and renews all types of federal firearms licenses. These licenses are issued to people who make, import, or sell firearms (including shotguns, rifles, and handguns) for their business.
These types of FFL (Federal Firearms Licenses) include:

  • Type 01 FFL – Dealer in Firearms Other Than Destructive Devices (this is one of the most common licenses issued for business use)
  • Type 02 – Pawnbroker in Firearms Other Than Destructive Devices
  • Type 03 – Collector of Curios and Relics
  • Type 06 – Manufacturer of Ammunition for Firearms Other Than Ammunition for Destructive Devices or Armor Piercing Ammunition
  • Type 07 FFL – Manufacturer of Firearms Other Than Destructive Devices
  • Type 08 – Importer of Firearms Other Than Destructive Devices or Ammunition for Firearms Other Than Destructive Devices, or Ammunition Other Than Armor Piercing Ammunition
  • Type 09 – Dealer in Destructive Devices
  • Type 10 – Manufacturer of Destructive Devices, Ammunition for Destructive Devices or Armor Piercing Ammunition
  • Type 11 – Importer of Destructive Devices, Ammunition for Destructive Devices or Armor Piercing Ammunition

To obtain one of these Federal Firearms Licenses (FFL), the applicant must pass a thorough background check. The licenses are also broken down into basic categories, including:

  • Collector FFL: This is for collectors only; the person cannot be involved in selling firearms
  • Dealer FFL: These applicants are buying and selling guns for their business (01,02 and 09)
  • Manufacturer FFL: There are two types of manufacturer FFL licenses. The first is for those that manufacture firearms and ammunition, and they can also act as a dealer. The other is for ammunition only, and they cannot be a firearm dealer or manufacturer. (06, 07 and 10)
  • Importer FFL: These individuals import firearms and/or ammunition and can also act as a dealer (08 and 11)

The cost to get one of these licenses varies from $30 to $3,000, which includes the application fee and a three-year renewal fee.
