How to Get a Concealed Carry Permit in Washington State

 In Gun Control

Have you recently purchased a firearm or moved to the state of Washington? If you want to carry it with you on your person in a gun holster or have a loaded pistol in your vehicle, you will need to have a concealed pistol license (CPL). Let’s talk about how to get a concealed carry permit in Washington state.

Concealed Carry Requirements

Washington State does not require training to obtain a CPL. To apply, visit your local law enforcement agency or check the Washington Department of Licensing website for a concealed pistol license application. Be prepared for your local law enforcement agency to run a background check on you, in addition to obtaining fingerprints, once you apply.

The application requires that you are at least 21 years old and have a valid state driver’s license or ID. If you are a permanent resident alien, you will need to show your permanent resident card. There is a fee to get the license. It must be paid with cash or check to the local law enforcement agency.

If you live in an unincorporated part of Washington state, you can apply with your county sheriff’s office. If you live in an incorporated city or town, apply at your local police department or county sheriff’s office. Once you pass the background check and fingerprinting process, you will receive your license. It is valid for five years from the date it is issued.

Concealed Carry Restrictions

There are some restrictions on the concealed carry license. If you have a revoked concealed pistol license, are subject to a court order or injunction that involves firearm possession, or have an outstanding warrant for your arrest for a felony or misdemeanor, you will not qualify for the license.

In addition, if you are free on bond while awaiting a trial, appeal, or sentencing for a felony, or you were already convicted of a felony, you may not qualify. For those who have had a felony conviction, there are instances where gun rights can be restored. However, you will need to contact the courts where your conviction was.
