I Want to Take Up Target Shooting, What Next?

SportingGunRange

Target shooting can be a lot of fun, but it can also be intimidating if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you want to take up target shooting and you’re wondering how to go about getting started, we have compiled some important must-knows about preparing for target shooting and what you can expect.

Step #1: Get the right training.

Understanding basic gun safety is very important. Research local beginner’s shooting classes online where you are given the opportunity to ask basic questions and learn important information about how to shoot your gun. This will not only allow you to learn important firearm safety rules, but it will also make your trip to the shooting range more enjoyable when you go.

Step #2: Determine which gun is right for you.

Not sure which gun to start with? There are a lot of options, but the most common guns used for target practice are pistols and rifles. If you’re new to guns altogether, starting with a .22 caliber is a good choice because it’s not as loud and it doesn’t have as much kick to it. If you’re interested in learning how to shoot moving targets like clay pigeons, try using a semi-automatic.

Step #3: Get the right gear.

Most of the time, shooting ranges will offer basic eye and ear protection as rental options, or you can buy your own to take every time. Disposable earplugs, safety glasses, closed-toed athletic shoes, and t-shirts are some of the basic gear you should have when you go shooting. Tank tops or open-toed shoes are generally not a good idea, because shooting rifle-pistols can often expel hot brass, which could hurt if it landed on exposed arms or feet.

Step #4: Don’t be afraid to ask plenty of questions.

Once you arrive at the target range, don’t hesitate to ask as many questions as you need. If you are new to shooting, most people at the range will be happy to help answer your questions, even if they are not trained instructors. Oftentimes, these people have been target shooting for a long time and they’re eager to help new shooters learn the tricks to shooting accurately. If you go in with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn, you’ll have the opportunity to succeed.

Once you have done your research, selected a gun, and undergone some basic gun training, it’s time to pick your range. Determine if an indoor or outdoor range works better for your interests, then head out there and start practicing. Trust your eyes and do your best to aim with as much accuracy as possible. It might take a few times to get over the learning curve, but go out there with an open mind and don’t get discourage if you’re missing the target.
